Chicago pop band Plain White T’s have released their 7th album American Nights. The band made a name for themselves with their Grammy-nominated single “Hey There Delilah” in 2006/2007 – there hasn’t been much to say about their music since then. Unfortunately, this trend will most likely continue.
American Nights is a mostly forgettable record. There are no huge missteps, but there’s a lack of maturity considering this is their 7th long playing effort. Several songs were painful listens – “Never Working” and “Heavy Rotation” – odd intros and the latter sounded like three separate songs melded together. The album isn’t a total loss with a number of songs having commercial appeal.
“Pause” is a sing-along anthem with oh, oh, oh’s that will engage live audiences. “Hey There Delilah” fans will love the guitar driven “You Belong.” “Dance Off Time” is a folky, foot stomper reminiscent of The Lumineers and Mumford & Sons. The band saved the most original track for last with “Here Comes That Sunrise” – an alt-rock track with a Tex-Mex inspired mariachi horn section.
American Nights is an average album — it’s a competent effort with glimmers of inspiration that just don’t seem to go anywhere.
