ALBUM REVIEW: Moyka – The Revelations of Love

Norwegian singer-songwriter and producer Moyka releases her debut album, The Revelations of Love, via Snafu Records. A concept album, The Revelations of Love, reveals the interconnecting threads of love and loss.

Moyka explains, “The overall theme of the album is love. It starts with discovering a new romance, leading further into the different stages and situations you could be finding yourself in when experiencing feelings of love with someone as a young adult. I sing about falling in and out of love and realising that sometimes it’s not the way you thought it would be.

A self-proclaimed “pop witch,” Moyka was born in the south of Norway. By the time she was ten years old, she was writing songs. Later, she studied music production in Bergen, where her artistic vision evolved. 2019 saw her release her debut EP, Circles, followed by 2020’s EP, Spaces. In 2021, Moyka dropped a series of singles, including “Stay,” “December (I Never Learn),” and “I Don’t Wanna Hold On.”

Listeners can delve into the backstories of the tracks on The Revelations of Love in Moyka’s ‘Track by Track’ YouTube series, which will culminate in an entire documentary film released November 2.

Comprising 10-tracks, entry points on the album include “As Long As You’re Here,” an ethereal dream-pop-like tune travelling on rippling, polychromatic surfaces topped by Moyka’s lustrous vocals. “Stay” opens on luscious percolating colours riding a pulsating rhythm. Moyka’s bewitching tones imbue the lyrics with warm, quixotic textures.

“Brokenhearted” rolls out on saturating gleaming hues, a throbbing rhythm, and plush layers of warbling synths. Brimming with sumptuous timbres, Moyka’s velvety, crystalline voice gives the lyrics tender compassion.

“When” blends a ghostly melody with dark leitmotifs of heartache, asking the question, when is the time to let go of a lost lover? Moyka’s voice reveals the inner struggle of dousing the flame of desire for an ex, infused with profound emotions.

The final track, “You and I,” opens on filtered voices atop a measured syncopated rhythm as riffling vocals give the lyrics intense poignancy.

Moyka shares, “To me, love is the most important feeling of them all. It’s so existential ‘cause it’s what I think makes us human. Last year hit us so hard. I felt a lot of grief and sadness because of everything that happened in my life and in the world. As a person who feels a lot intensely, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by everything. One thing that kind of woke up the flame in me again was music that reminded me there is hope to feel good again. To feel love again.”
