Having seemingly been in hiding for years, Richard D. James has become remarkably prolific with an album and 2 e.p’s within the last two 18 months under his Aphex Twin guise. Orphaned Deejay Selex 2006-08 is his first release under the AFX name since the superb Analord series in 2005 and this release picks up where that series left off with a mixture of acid infused tracks that display all the unique hallmarks we’ve come to expect.
Where this record is similar to Syro is in its titles with all 8 tracks being named in a spellcheck bothering way. Opener serge fenix Rendered 2 is a great start to the e.p. A classic AFX acid track, it’s as good as any of the Analord tracks and its follow up dmx acid test carries on in a similar vein. As you’d expect, there’s a strong experimental edge to all the tracks on here but these two have an immediacy the Syro tracks, which while still excellent, didn’t have. All 8 tracks on the e.p. are excellent and your attention doesn’t waiver at all throughout.

The highlight for me is NEOTEKT72 which is is the longest track on the e.p. at just over 6 minutes. It’s a throwback to earlier AFX and indeed Aphex Twin works and it’s one of those tracks that only Richard D James could produce. Superb.
Orphaned Deejay Selex 2006-08 is a welcome return for AFX. Highly recommended
